The Black Ferns Sevens have finished third at the Madrid round of the World Series.

They beat Canada 26-14 to win bronze, after suffering a surprise loss to the Canadians in pool play.

Australia claimed the women's title as a Maddison Levi hat-trick helped her side beat France 26-7 for their first cup win since Cape Town in December.

In the men's competition, the All Blacks Sevens finished fourth losing to Fiji 17-10 in the bronze medal match. While France won the men's title beating Argentina 19-5.

Under the new model, the international Sevens season featured seven regular season events plus a grand final.

The top eight teams, based on cumulative series points at the conclusion of the seventh round in Singapore, contested the new 'winner takes all' grand final in Madrid.

It means Australia and France are 2024 Sevens Champions.

The highlight of the Sevens calendar is the Paris Olympics with the tournament kicking off on 25 July.

The Black Ferns are the defending Olympic champions while the All Black Sevens won silver in Tokyo three years ago.
