The Kiwis ran in nine tries in their lopsided quarterfinal against China at a hot and steamy Stade de France and will now tackle the USA in the semifinal at 1.30am on Wednesday.

The Americans ended the hopes of Great Britain with a 17-7 win.

In the second semi Australia will take on Canada, who silenced the home crowd by beating France.

Meanwhile, Erika Fairweather finished seventh in 200m freestyle semifinal where the Australians Mollie O'Callaghan won gold with Ariarne Titmus taking the silver.

A heartbroken Sam Gaze has spoken of how he tried to overcome a "horrendous" start and had nothing left, after climbing to sixth in a fast Olympic mountain biking medal final. "I emptied myself out there," he said.

The New Zealand equestrian eventing team finished outside medal contention, placing eighth overall as the competition concluded with show jumping at the Chateau de Versailles.
