Kiwi paddler Luuka Jones says after 20 years of competing in Europe she is ready to make the leap and retire from kayaking.

Speaking to First Up, Jones said: "I love the sport, I love training for it, I love competing in the sport itself. It's incredible especially for this new kayak cross discipline. But there's so many sacrifices you have to make as an athlete."

Jones was disappointed to miss the medals in the women's kayak cross on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Kiwi women's pursuit team are a hot chance for a medal.

Ally Wollaston, Bryony Botha, Emily Shearman and Nicole Shields set a new national record finishing in a time of 4 minutes 04.679 and were the fastest qualifiers.

New Zealand will race Italy in the first round after midnight with the winner getting the chance to go for the gold or silver. If they lose they will be among nations racing for the bronze.
