Australia has won four gold and two bronze in Paris to record the country's most medals in a single day at an Olympics, while also surpassing Athens and Tokyo for its most gold medals in a single Games.

Nina Kennedy completed a stunning day for Australia, owning the pole vault competition in emotional scenes at the Stade de France.

Skateboarder Keegan Palmer successfully defended his Olympic title in the men's park event.

Matt Wearn also won back-to-back gold by taking out the men's dinghy in the sailing programme.

To top it off, Australia triumphed in the men's team cycling pursuit for the first time since the 2004 Athens Olympics, defeating Great Britain in the final.

That gives Australia 18 gold medals, beating the tally reached at the 2004 Athens Olympics and in Tokyo three years ago.

Australia also managed two podium finishes in athletics.

Matthew Denny became the first Australian to win an Olympic medal in the men's discus with a bronze.

Jemima Montag and Rhydian Cowley claimed bronze in the mixed relay race walk marathon.
