An inquiry's been launched into a tribe's claim to marine rights in Hawke's Bay.
Ngati Pahauwera is seeking title to an area from Poututu Stream to Waikari River.
Officials are now asking for feedback from people who use the area.
Customary marine title recognises rights and interests, which have existed since 1840 in parts of the marine and coastal area - but public access and fishing is unaffected.
The Government says the inquiry is to gather information and is not a negotiation between the Crown and the iwi.
The claim is a hangover from the Foreshore and Seabed Act, which was repealed and replaced by the Marine and Coastal Area Act.
The inquiry is being led by Dame Justice Judith Potter.
The Government will make a final call on whether the rights or title exist.
