A Teachers Disciplinary Tribunal report into the misconduct of a former principal at Pamapuria School is also a stern reminder for kura to watch over tamariki, a Far North leader says.
Stephen Hovell has been censured for failing to protect pupils from the convicted paedophile, teacher James Parker.
Parker was arrested in 2012 on multiple charges of sexual offending against young boys, and was sentenced to preventive detention, with a minimum of seven years in prison and lifelong parole.
The tribunal found there was no evidence that Mr Hovell knew about Parker's offending, or could have stopped it.
But it found his failure to stop Parker taking boys home, after a warning letter from police, was negligent and incompetent.
Te Runanga o Te Rarawa chair, Haami Piripi, said he was relieved Mr Hovell didn't know of the offending because he is so well respected.
But he said in the second matter he made a mistake, and that had been revealed.
He said the tribunal's finding brought closure for the community.
But he said the report did help schools to monitor what was happening to children.
