Robust debate is expected at a Māori Television board meeting this week about relocation options for the station.
Māori Television, which has 150 staff, is currently based in Newmarket in Auckland.
Over the past 12 years, the organisation has spent about $20 million in rent.
A decision is needed, as the current lease runs out in July 2017, and any relocation is expected to take at least a year.
It is believed there are two leading options, west Auckland and Rotorua, though other options include south Auckland and Hamilton.
The board is meeting on Friday but no details have been given about when a final decision is likely to be made.
