Maori likely to take up fin fish farming

7:15 pm on 24 August 2011

A Maori mussel farm owner in Hauraki says Maori are likely to take up fin fish farming, if new legislation gives them the chance.

One of the Government's proposed changes to the aquaculture laws would allow for a trial of fin fish farming in the Hauraki Gulf.

The Government says the area is suitable for raising hapuka or kingfish in sea cages.

A mussel farmer Harry Mikaere says the caged hapuka would be very different to those raised in a natural environment.

But he says iwi are likely to move into fin fish farming because it fits in with cultivating shellfish.
