Free: Choice?

A few months ago, The Wireless team heard the story of a young woman who fundraised to go to Australia and have an abortion.

In discussing it, it became clear that of the four of us, two knew the New Zealand law around abortion, and two didn't. And that seemed to be reflected when we asked other people.

Abortion will always be a controversial, and divisive, topic. So this week, we're asking the question: should we be talking about this more?

We start with a Radio New Zealand Insight documentary, looking at sexual health, reproduction, and, in light of the past few weeks, education. Who should be teaching people about sex, and are they teaching the right things?

We then have a feature looking at the law. Later, I spent a day in a clinic, talking to staff, and another talking about contraception. We'll hear from both sides of the debate, and ask if there is a middle ground to be had.

And throughout the week, we have stories of women who have had abortions, and how they felt before, during and after the procedure.
