A man and two children are dead after a shooting at a house in Dunedin.

Police received an emergency call about 9.55pm on Wednesday after neighbours reported hearing gunshots coming from a property in the northern harbour suburb of St Leonards.

The Armed Offenders Squad was sent to the house in Kiwi Street where they discovered the bodies of a 51-year-old Milton man, a nine-year-old boy and a girl aged six.

Police say the children lived at the address with their 49-year-old mother who had been at the property at the time the incident occurred. Police said the relationship between the woman and the 51-year-old man is yet to be determined.
