Triple ton

12:11 pm on 18 February 2014

New Zealand cricket captain Brendon McCullum has made cricketing history by becoming the first New Zealander to reach 300 runs in an innings.

Just the over before, Jimmy Neesham hit his first Test century on debut.

Two balls later McCullum was caught behind for 302.

A short time ago the Black Caps were 626 for seven - a lead of 380 runs - with a declaration expected shortly.

The Black Caps are well in control of the second and final test against India at the Basin Reserve in Wellington, after a world-record partnership between McCullum and the wicketkeeper BJ Watling.

After more than 500 balls and about 12 hours at the crease, McCullum walked off the Basin Reserve on Monday to a standing ovation.

McCullum and BJ Watling came together when the Black Caps were 94 for 5 and still needed 152 runs to make India bat again.

The pair went on to break the world record for a 6th wicket partnership, notching up 352 runs.

New Zealand finished today with a lead of 325.
