Power cuts, damage as storm lashes north

Gales have battered Auckland, Northland and Coromandel, cutting power, bringing down trees onto power lines, houses and roads.

A Civil Defence spokesperson said trampolines and other objects had been flung "like missiles" in the storm and buildings had been damaged.

A Civil Defence spokesperson said trampolines and other objects had been flung "like missiles" in the storm and buildings had been damaged.

The biggest wind gusts in the region had been 145 kilometres an hour at Whangaparaoa and 170 kilometres an hour at Tiritiri Matangi Island, just off the northern coast, MetService said.

The Fire Service was inundated with about 600 calls as trees and power lines came down and roofs were lifted across the region. Whangaparaoa, the North Shore and the west of the city were hardest hit.
