What next for Labour?

Labour MPs are arriving at Parliament this morning for a crucial caucus meeting after the party suffered its worst election result since 1922.

A number of MPs want a review of Labour's performance before deciding whether David Cunliffe or someone else should lead the party for the next three years.

Cunliffe, who has said he would ask the caucus to trigger a leadership primary as he wants to refresh his mandate, will be facing tough questions after Labour pulled in just 24.7 per cent of the party vote.

Senior Labour MP Clayton Cosgrove would not be drawn this morning on whether he supported Cunliffe. He told Radio New Zealand some within the party did not seem to accept what went wrong.

“Seventy-five per cent of New Zealanders did not vote for us thousands of former Labour voters elected Mr Key. Thousands of people do not feel that we are a broad-based party, they feel we are a narrow party with very little in common with them and they're right.”

Former Labour Party leader David Shearer says the party should consider internal polling results as part of a review of the party's election defeat.
