TOKiMONSTA: Los Angeles native Jennifer Lee, aka TOKiMONSTA, is back in New Zealand this week for a show in Wellington tomorrow night and another in Auckland next Friday. Last here in 2013, the Brainfeeder signee also recently launched her own imprint, Young Art, which saw her release her last EP Desiderium, on there late last year. Support for tomorrow’s show at San Fran comes from Dam G and Lydia, and tickets are still available from Dash.
NZ Young Writers Festival: Taking place over the next four days, the first ever New Zealand Young Writers Festival will see 18 events, all of them free, including talks around young Māori and new media, coverage of reality TV, or getting the most out of your editor (including our very own, Marcus Stickley). It’s being held in Dunedin, the home to many past NZ literary greats and aims to inspire the next wave of talent out of the country. Hit them up here to check out the full programme of events.
Team Dynamite: To celebrate the release of their latest split single release ‘Tonight’s Ego / Tropicola’, local hip hop trio Team Dynamite are playing this Friday at Whammy Bar. The song is the first release from their forthcoming new album, and follow-up to last year’s Shepherd’s Delight, which they say is “pretty much done”. Entry is $10 on the door and support comes from DJ Substance.
Wine Cellar 11th anniversary: Auckland venue the Wine Cellar is celebrating its 11th birthday this Saturday by co-hosting a huge show with the neighbouring Whammy Bar. On the bill are Girls Pissing On Girls, Mice On Stilts, Ie. Crazy, New Gum Sarn, Hopetown Brown, Bespin, The Beths, Oscar Dowling and Last Minute Boys, and you can get in early with presale tickets available now via Under The Radar.
Emily Edrosa: Auckland-based Emily Edrosa is heading South with her band this week for shows over the next three nights, beginning with one in Dunedin as part of the NZ Young Writers Festival this evening. Expect to hear tracks from last year’s self-titled EP, as well as some “very sick” new tunes too. More details over on the Facebook event page.
A Strange Day’s Night: Marking 50 years since The Rolling Stones played Auckland Town Hall, A Strange Day’s Night is a fundraising concert for Play It Strange, a trust that aims to encourage young New Zealanders to develop their interest in songwriting and performing. It takes place tonight and the lineup includes Dictaphone Blues, Courtney Hate, Auckland Youth Choir, Papatoetoe High School and a bunch more. Doggystyle For Daisy: Taking place this Saturday is Doggystyle For Daisy, a fundraiser event for the Chained Dog Awareness NZ, a charity that is made up of volunteers who rescue neglected and abused dogs. It’s on at Auckland’s Neck Of The Woods and will see a lineup of Supervillains RMC, Tyra Hammond, Heavy, Rackets and the Native Stance dance crew perform on the night. Get in the door for $5 or $10 with a raffle ticket.
