Fraser Ross and French For Rabbits: After spending the past couple of years in Glasgow, Wellington folk musician Fraser Ross is back and touring the country to mark the release of his debut album, Mongrels. Joining him for a bunch of those tour dates his local dream-pop outfit French For Rabbits, including a date this Saturday at Dunedin’s Chicks Hotel. Tickets for the show are $12 and available to pre-purchase through Under The Radar, where you can also find details of their two other upcoming shows in Paekakariki and Wellington.
“Not Funny” Comedy: Described as “actual good comedy by actual good comedians!”, the “Not Funny” comedy show is on tonight at Golden Dawn. The event, which takes place on the second Thursday of every month, this time around features comedians Joseph Harper, Guy Montgomery, Rhys Matthewson, Angella Dravid, Paul Amos, and David Correos. Entry is free and things kick off at 8pm.
Hermitude and Young Tapz: NSW electronic act Hermitude, whose latest album Dark Night Sweet Light went to number one in Australia, play in Dunedin tonight, Wellington on Friday and Auckland on Saturday. Joining them on all dates is New Zealand-via-Zimbabwe rapper Young Tapz, who was featured on Hermitude’s single ‘Through The Roof’. Tickets for the Dunedin show, which is part of OUSA’s re-orientation are available through Ticket Direct, while you can grab tickets from Non-Stop Tix for everything else.
Ladi6: For the month of July, Ladi6 is keeping residence at Matterhorn in Auckland on Thursday nights and Wellington on Saturdays. The Alpha Sessions see her play with Parks, Julien Dyne and Brandon Haru, who will “deconstruct, recreate, create from scratch and air out re-worked versions of some of their Ladi6 favourites”. There’ll be special guests at each show too and presales are available for $10 through Under The Radar.
Land of the Long White Stain: If you haven’t watched it yet, carve out some time for Land of the Long White Stain, a new 30-minute “love letter to music on the margins”. Written and directed by Claire Duncan (I.E. Crazy and Dear Time’s Waste), the film captures performances from Girls Pissing On Girls Pissing, Seth Frightening, I.E. Crazy and Shab Orchestra. As Duncan says: “It’s a personal tribute to the music and people I love; their relentless pursuit of creative excellence, regardless of mainstream trends and taste.”

The Chills: Dunedin-based act The Chills have two shows lined up this weekend. Friday will see them play Chick’s Hotel in Dunedin and they’ll follow that with a matinee show at Dux Live in Christchurch on Sunday, beginning at 3.30pm. They’ll be joined by some as-yet-unannounced “special guests” and tickets are available from Under The Radar.
Moses: Wellington-based band Moses have just released their debut three-song EP, and have a couple of dates this weekend lined up to celebrate the release. The band play with Nakey and Moonpup on Friday at The Darkroom before heading up to Auckland on Saturday for a show at Golden Dawn with The Eversons and Ha The Unclear.
