Lonesome: Taking place as part of the New Zealand International Film Festival, Lawrence Arabia is teaming up with local ensemble Carnivorous Plant Society to live score the 1928 film Lonesome. Originally released as a silent film, bits of dialogue were eventually incorporated into Lonesome as “talkies” began to change the way films were made and consumed. The event takes place at The Civic this Sunday and before it heads to Wellington on August 9.
Shlohmo: After playing here only last year, producer Shlohmo is back for two shows this week with his LA-based WEDIDIT collective (Purple, D33J and Nick Melons). The tour comes off the back of the release of his new album Dark Red and will see him play the Kings Arms tonight and Bodega in Wellington on Friday. Tickets are $49.90 and available through Under The Radar.
Earl Sweatshirt: After last playing here at Laneway 2014, Earl Sweatshirt is back in the country for two shows in support of his latest album I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside. He plays tonight at Wellington’s Bodega and tomorrow at The Studio in Auckland. Although his Wellington gig sold out, what’s left of the remaining tickets for his Auckland show are available through Dash.
Cymbol 303 x This Pale Fire: A couple of days back we premiered ‘Don’t Rob Me’, the latest single from emerging Auckland act Cymbol 303 x This Pale Fire. With their EP, The Cycle, out tomorrow the duo are celebrating the release with a show at downtown Auckland venue Tyler Street Garage this Saturday. There’s no cover charge for entry and you’ll be able to grab a free copy of the EP while you’re there. Find the full details via Facebook.
Knxledge: Philly hip-hop musician Knxledge aka Glen Boothe is in New Zealand for one show on Friday night at Ponsonby Social Club. Last in the country back in 2012, Boothe has been keeping busy – he recently worked on a track from Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly and released his new album Hud Dreems, to go along with the other sixty-something releases under his belt. The one of show comes as a prelude to a bigger club tour across Australia. Entry is free.
Blue Bloods: Formed back in 2013, Auckland act Blue Bloods have just released two EPS, Phone Sex and Lip Service. Before they head out on tour in Melbourne and Sydney, they also have a show lined up tonight at Whammy Bar alongside Street Chant, Black Science and Undiscovered Moons Of Saturn. Doors open at 8pm and it’s $10 on the door.
Love Yr Bros: Auckland-based acts Dad Jokes, The Admiral and Roy Irwin are mid-way through their ‘Love Yr Bros’ nationwide tour and this weekend they trek on with a couple of dates lined up in the South Island. Tonight they play at the Darkroom in Christchurch before hitting Chicks Hotel in Dunedin on Saturday. They’ll round off the tour next weekend with shows in Auckland and Wellington and you can find out more over at Under The Radar.
