Wellington trio The All Seeing Hand are known for their downright ferocious live shows.
The band, made up of Alphabethead (turntables), Jonny Marks (throat) and B. Michael Knight (drums), say that they their approach to playing, which sees them perform non-stop from beginning to end, means that they can test out new ideas and refine them on the go.
“Because of the nature of the music, we can trial out ideas just somewhere in the set without it necessarily having to be a complete piece. Which means that by the time the piece is complete it’s really grown into itself,” says Marks.
For Knight though, it’s not simply about performing. He says they work with visual artists to create a fully immersive live experience.
Erica Sklenars has played a big part in this, says Knight, and she’s behind the band’s live projections and costuming.
“She just has these really amazing creative ideas that lead us in all kinds of crazy directions.”
While they’re currently in the midst of an extensive 11-date tour around New Zealand, we caught the band awhile back at a secret show put on by Eyegum Music Collective. Check it out and see what all the fuss is about.
