Kick Out The Jams: HDSPNS

9:40 am on 28 August 2015

Interviews and live sets from the New Zealand music underground. This week, we catch Auckland band HDSPNS.

Auckland post-rock band HDSPNS (pronounced HeaDSPiNS) have an aversion to vowels and a HRDN (pronounced HaRDoN) for deconstructing the possibilities of what a guitar band can sound like.

Having formed in 2011, the four-piece act have released a couple of EPs and recently toured Aotearoa in support of their first full length album, / 'E N (D) , G Ā M /.

Their current sound refines the prog and math rock elements of their earlier work, combined with a pronounced bass groove. It’s the result of what they describe as a more organic approach to writing and recording this album.

“It’s more fun to play that way,” says keyboardist/guitarist Ben Leonard.

“I think we got more into just enjoying playing together, instead of everyone having to have sick riffs all the time.”
