Laura Marling: UK folk musician Laura Marling is in the country for one show this Friday at the Powerstation. Here with her full band, you can expect to hear songs from her fifth and latest album Short Movie, released earlier this year. Tickets are still available from AAA.
Songs For Syria: Get your long weekend started early with “Giving A Shit: Songs For Syria”, a fundraising gig featuring Heavy, Miss June, Racing, New Gum Sarn and Sea Views. Proceeds go to Asylum Seeker Support Trust and Unicef for their work with refugees affected by the Syrian conflict, and tickets to the Kings Arms show are $10 from Under The Radar or $15 on the door.
Fat Freddy’s Drop: This week Fat Freddy’s Drop are celebrating the release of their fourth album BAYS, which is due out on Friday. The seven-piece band will introduce the record with a fried chicken disco to see out the week before a sold-out show at the Auckland Town Hall on Saturday. Miss out on tickets? The Things We Do: After a sold-out season at the Wellington Fringe Festival, theatre production The Things We Do is in Auckland for a three-show run at the Old Folks Association. Described as “a one-woman physical comedy about the things we do in the supermarket”, the event is also a double-billing with Wellington-based musician Finn Johansson who’ll open the evening with songs from his latest album. The 91 Club: This Friday Radio One are once again hosting The 91 Club, this time featuring local acts Fazerdaze and Kang Strang, as well as DJ Marina Sakimoto (of Shunkan). The show, at Chick’s Hotel in Port Chalmers, is free with your Onecard or $10 without. Details here.
Tauranga Arts Festival: Tauranga Arts Festival begins tonight and runs for the next 10 days with music, theatre, visual arts, writer’s talks and more. Finding The Silence and Daffodils get things started this evening and you can find everything else you need to know right here.
The Shifting Sands: Dunedin psych-pop band The Shifting Sands have just released their new album, Cosmic Radio Station, and they’re playing two North Island shows this weekend to celebrate. The three-piece act hit up Moon on Friday ahead of an Auckland show at Golden Dawn the following night. Check out their video for ‘All The Stars’.
