Weekly Listening: SBTRKT, I.E Crazy, Shab Orkestra and more

11:55 am on 23 March 2016

A showcase of some of the best new music releases from the past week.

SBTRKT feat. The-Dream – ‘Good Morning’

‘Good Morning’ is the first proper offering from masked British producer SBTRKT since his 2014 album Wonder Where We Land. That one featured guest spots from Ezra Koenig, Jessie Ware and Sampha, and this time he’s enlisted R&B hero The-Dream for a track that’s big on blaring synths and charming one-liners.

I.E Crazy – ‘An Incident On The Edge Of Town’

‘An Incident On The Edge Of Town’, the latest from Claire Duncan’s newest project I.E. Crazy, is a brisk and dizzying track that’s underscored with distorted guitars and crashing drums. It should hold you down until her full-length is released later in the year.

Shab Orkestra – ‘Procession of Dogs / Herrnhut’

After a meditative performance at Auckland City Limits, local duo Shab Orkestra - the newish collaboration between Steven Huf (Sharpie Crows, Huf) and Alexander Wenet (Street Chant, GPOGP) – have just released two new slow-burning singles: ‘Procession of Dogs’ and ‘Hernnhut’. If you’re at work, consider it the perfect antidote to the week not being over just yet.

ZAYN – ‘Befour’

Now we’re talking. Out of the handful of songs we’ve heard from Mind Of Mine so far, ‘Befour’ might just be the best. This one marks a shift in intensity for Zayn – it’s dreamy and sensual and irresistible. “I’ve done this before, but not like this,” he begins. Finally, some actual pillow talk.

M.I.A. – ‘MIA OLA / FOREIGN FRIEND’

Between this and ‘Borders’, M.I.A. is not messing around.

Males – None The Wiser

It took them awhile to set it free but None The Wiser, the full-length album from Dunedin garage-pop trio Males, has finally seen the light of day. The nine-song album was recorded back in 2014 and, as expected, it’s loud, urgent and big on melodies.

Street Chant – ‘Insides’

Haoura – the long-awaited second album from Street Chant – will finally be out April 1. We got a proper press release about it and everything. Also, now there’s a new song – ‘Insides’ – which you can hear above. So it must be happening, right? Tell us it’s not an April Fool’s hoax.
