A magnitude 4.0 earthquake has hit near Christchurch, waking some residents.

So far 914 people have reported feeling the weak quake on GeoNet, which struck at 6.34am.
GeoNet reported the quake as having a depth of 4km, 30km south of Oxford.
One person wrote on Twitter that the quake woke them up.
