Three youth have been arrested after police say a tracking dog followed their scent after an armed robbery at a petrol station.
Four people entered the Te Ngai Road Caltex in Rotorua about 6am on Wednesday, and threatened a staff member, police said:
"They threatened a staff member, stole cash, vape products and cigarettes.
"The offenders then left in a stolen vehicle which they dumped nearby."
A caller alerted police about where to find the vehicle, and a police dog and handler were then used to hunt the area.
The three young people from Hamilton and Rotorua were found at a nearby property, with a machete, police said.
Property that was taken from the petrol station was also recovered, as well as at least one other weapon, they said, and the stolen vehicle was recovered and will be returned to its owner.
The young people face charges of aggravated robbery and unlawfully taking a motor vehicle.
Inspector Phil Gillbanks said it was very lucky no one was injured during the robbery, and said it was a good reminder to call police straight away on 111 if you see suspicious things.
"We will not tolerate this behaviour and will take enforcement action where appropriate to keep our community safe.
"Police would like to thank the members of the public who were alert enough to ... call Police right away.
