A man is facing serious charges after allegedly pointing a gun at a member of the public in South Auckland's Manurewa.

Police were told a man approached a resident at a Manurewa complex at about 12.30am on Wednesday, inspector David Christoffersen said.

After a brief conversation, the man allegedly grabbed a gun from his car and pointed it at the resident, before leaving the area.

The car involved was later found outside a house in Māngere, Christoffersen said.

"A man was seen exiting the vehicle, and our staff soon swooped in and arrested the man."

After the car was searched, Christoffersen said a pump action shotgun and an amount of cannabis in the boot and shotgun cartridges were found in the house.

A 33-year-old man will appear in Manukau District Court on Thursday facing charges of presenting a firearm at a person, three counts of unlawfully possessing a firearm or explosives and possessing cannabis for supply.
