At least a dozen people remain in hospital after a tour bus and two cars collided south of Queenstown.

A person in one of the cars was killed and 20 were injured, two critically, in the crash on State Highway Six near the intersection with Glen Nevis Station Road at Kingston on Thursday afternoon.

Two people trapped in the bus had to be cut out.

St John sent at least 11 ambulances to the scene and seven helicopters helped to take the injured to hospital.

SH6 has reopened.
