Wellington City Council's recently opened convention centre is runner-up in the World Architects Building of the Year awards.

Designed by Studio Pacific Architecture, Tākina was the only New Zealand building to make the shortlist in the international awards.

The council said the design drew inspiration from Tākina's maritime location and Wellington's dramatic weather patterns and landforms, with Te Upoko o Te Ika - the head of the great fish of Maui - also represented.

Architecture project lead Daryl Calder said they were "immensely proud" to see it recognised internationally.

Wellington's mayor Tory Whanau said she was "absolutely thrilled" by the news.

"This is a significant achievement for our city and our architectural community.

"This iconic structure will undoubtedly serve as a landmark for our city, continuing to attract visitors and exhibitions from all around the world."

Commercial development manager David Perks said repeated feedback was that Tākina was as much a space for the public to enjoy as those attending conferences.

Tākina came second place to The Nokha Village Community Centre in India's Rajasthan state after a public poll of 3500 votes.
