The Defence Ministry has put out a tender for help strengthening systems "increasingly vulnerable" to cyber attack.

Its new Defence Capability Plan envisages spending between $100 million and $300 million on cyber upgrades in the next four years.

The tender for the first part of its update work, called the Cyber Security and Support Capability programme, said as the Defence Force went more digital, the threat landscape got bigger.

"Cyber intrusions are an ever-present threat, and our physical and virtual connections to the world are increasingly vulnerable," it said.

It cautioned bidders that Defence, like other public agencies, was operating in tight financial times and the government was seeking "maximum value for money".

The first lot of technology the Ministry is after includes a treat intelligence platform, and a planning system.

It said it would require assurances from bidders around where equipment was manufactured and security measures for its installation.

The $12 billion capability plan said Defence must protect its cyber-connected capabilities to remain "a credible and trusted partner".
