Outbreak of deadly virus in horses

A property in southern Queensland is under quarantine after an outbreak of lyssavirus in horses.

Biosecurity Queensland is testing the health of 20 horses at Highbourne Farm, west of Allora, in the Darling Downs.

The ABC reports the presence of lyssavirus, a deadly bat-born virus similar to rabies, has been confirmed in a horse that was put down on the property last Saturday.

It was the first recorded case of lyssavirus in a horse in Australia. Six people who were in contact with the horse are being treated and monitored.

It is not known if infected horses can spread lyssavirus to humans, because it has only ever spread to humans via bats.

The ABC reports only three people have ever contracted lyssavirus and they all died. All were from Queensland.

Lyssavirus was first identified in 2006 during tests for hendra virus in a black flying fox.
