Manly avenged last year's NRL grand final defeat by Melbourne with a record 40-0 win on Sunday night in Sydney.

The Sea Eagles led only 8-0 at halftime, but ended up with eight tries.

Melbourne became the first team in 30 years to be held scoreless in a grand final since 1975.

Halfback Matt Orford scored a hat-trick.

Manly veteran Steve Menzies came off the bench and scored a try in his last game - his 349th appearance in the NRL.

The Clive Churchill Award for player of the grand final went to prop Brent Kite.

It was Manly's first title win since 1996.
