The laptops, with retina display, were sold between September 2015 and February 2017 and can be identified by their serial number.
The recall does not affect any other 15-inch MacBook Pro units or other Mac notebooks.
Affected customers will have their batteries replaced without cost.
Earlier the world's biggest smartphone maker, Samsung, was forced to recall its Note 7 model as faulty batteries in some of its devices caught fire.
