Consulate attacked by Taliban

5:59 am on 6 April 2010

The Pakistani Taliban says it was responsible for an attack on the United States consulate in the city of Peshawar on Monday. Seven people including all four attackers, were killed.

The BBC reports a series of large explosions were heard close to the consulate, but the attackers failed to get into the compound.

Pakistan's main Taliban faction said it had carried out the raid.

Earlier, 43 people died in a suicide attack about 80km north-east of Peshawar, at a rally held by a Pashtun nationalist party.
