A court in South Africa has found former chief of police Jackie Selebi guilty of corruption.

Selebi, 60, also a former president of Interpol, was accused of having links to organised crime and accepting bribes worth 1.2 million rand ($US156,000).

But the court found him not guilty of defeating the ends of justice.

Selebi had denied both charges.

Selebi now faces at least 15 years in prison. The BBC reports he will be sentenced in two weeks.

The African National Congress says the verdict shows no-one is above the law.

In a statement, the ANC says the case shows South Africa is a country governed by laws applied without fear or favour to anyone.
