German/French crisis talks scheduled

8:52 pm on 16 August 2011

The German Chancellor Angela Merkel is holding talks in Paris on Tuesday with her French counterpart Nicolas Sarkozy with the eurozone debt crisis at the top of the agenda.

After weeks of turmoil on the markets, investors are looking for greater commitment from Europe's two major economic powers to find a resolution to the crisis.

The two leaders will discuss ways to solve the crisis that is now threatening to engulf Italy and Spain.

The BBC reports that figures released on Tuesday show Spanish economic growth slowed to 0.2% in the second quarter of the year, down from 0.3% in the previous three months.

One of the world's most influential investors, George Soros, says the continuing eurozone debt problem will cause a very serious financial crisis unless European nations effectively guarantee to repay each other's debts, something the German government has been resisting.
