Protests in India over arrest of campaigner

8:30 pm on 17 August 2011

There have been protests across India over the arrest and jailing of an veteran anti-corruption campaigner. Others joined candle-light vigils.

Parliament was adjourned amid rowdy scenes following the arrest.

Thousands of people took to the streets in major cities chanting slogans against the government or expressing their support for Anna Hazare, 74, pledged to go on hunger strike in the capital, Delhi, on Tuesday despite police denying him permission to fast for more than three days.

Police arrested at least 1400 people.

The government says Mr Hazare poses a threat to public safety with his plan to hold a public hunger strike in pursuit of tougher measures to tackle corruption.

He has rejected an offer to be freed from detention.

On Monday, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said hunger strikes by campaigners would not help to tackle corruption.
