This is a special episode of the podcast Rancho Notorious (fresh from a 30-month hiatus) featuring an interview with the writer and director Mike Mills about his wonderful new film C’mon C’mon which stars Joaquin Phoenix as a radio producer who has to look after his 9-year-old nephew, Jesse, for a few weeks while Jesse’s Mom (played by Gaby Hoffman) has a family crisis to manage. Jesse is played by a wonderful young actor called Woody Norman. The arrangement ends up being a kind of road trip across America, from LA to New York and then New Orleans – a voyage of discovery for them both.
Mike Mills is probably best known as the director of the semi-autobiographical film Beginners from 2010 in which Christopher Plummer plays Ewan McGregor’s father, coming out as gay at the age of 80. Plummer won an Academy Award for that role.
Mills joined me over a Zoom link from Los Angeles.
