The Black Quartet from Auckland were a refreshing addition to the Womad 2018 line up when they took to the Dell stage on Sunday 18th of March.
The weather was perfect and their performance was not only exceptional for it’s point of difference but equally because of their shared musical prowess and diverse repertoire, including a subtle tribute to David Bowie.
The Black Quartet are a sophisticated, versatile group of talented young musicians, founded by Mahuia Bridgman-Cooper and Jess Hindin.
They all have a strong classical background but their musical skills and musical passion for all genres of music has seen the ensemble playing and recording with an astonishing list of artists that includes Kanye West through to Kiwi artists like Six60, Hayley Westenra, Moana and the Tribe and Ladyhawke.
Named for the colour of the clothes classical musicians favour, The Black Quartet has also featured in TV commercials and on shows like The X-Factor, performed at outdoor festivals and played alongside orchestras including the Auckland Philharmonia.
The Black Quartet was not only musically exquisite, but also superb entertainment that had the audience cheering them on all the way.
