This year's National Brass Band Championships are underway in Dunedin. The Championships have a long and distinguished history and were first held in Invercargill back in 1880.

Tom Davoren is one of the chief adjudicators, hailing originally from Wales and now based in the United States.

Tom talked with David Morriss about how the contest is structured and what he's looking for in the performances. He explains that in order for those 'great musical moments' to happen, there needs to be a basic set of technical foundations in place.

"Only when a band is beautifully balanced, with a beautiful sound and in tune... only when a band has exactly the same idea of the way it executes particular motifs - right from the highest instrument in the band to the lowest instrument in the band - only when all those things are aligned can the innate characteristics of the music be revealed."
