Arohanui Strings is a Sistema-inspired music education/social development programme based in Lower Hutt, Wellington.
The organisation turns 13 this year and is marking the occasion with a day of music and fun.
Programme director Margaret Guldborg talks with Bryan Crump about how Arohanui Strings has grown over the years: from one classroom back in 2010, they now have five after-school orchestra groups up and running, with two more starting this term.
The programme offers free instruments and free music lessons.
"These days, you mention violin and most people go 'oh - expensive, elitist'. So here with Arohanui Strings we're trying to break that barrier."
Arohanui Strings Foundation Day celebration takes place on Sunday 13 August at Lower Hutt Events Centre
