The Gala, which marks the start of the NZIFF, will still go ahead in Wellington later this month.
Russell McVeagh has had a long standing relationship with the festival as pro bono lawyers and has been a sponsor since 2002.
It was the law firm’s decision to withdraw from the Gala.
