    The third in the series of programmes by Marshall Walker in which he tells of his special relationship with the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius - the previous ones being A Letter to Sibelius and The Fog and the Island. In this one he relates stories of his maternal grandfather and his uncle, both of whose lives were touched by Sibelius's famous Valse Triste. This programme is a finalist in the 2007 New Zealand Radio Awards to be announced on the 28th April (RNZ)

    This first installment traces Basie's early years; his childhood, his pilgrimage to Harlem, the home of stride piano, his relationship with Thomas "Fats" Waller, and his early life as a travelling musician with Katie Krippen and her Kitties, Walter Page and the Blue Devils and Jimmy Rushing. This part ends with Basie's arrival in Kansas City and his encounter with the Benny Moten Band (NPR)

    Liu Fang

    "Le Son de Soie" (Silk Sound)

    Liu Fang is a Chinese-born virtuoso of the pipa, a pear-shaped Chinese lute, and the guzheng zither. She left China to live in Montreal via Berlin and along the way has met artists of various traditions including African and Western which have had a dramatic effect on her performance style

    'Le Son de Soie' reflects this diversity and is a selection of classic Chinese repertoire reinterpreted on the pipa and guzheng zither blended with instruments and musical elements from various other cultures as well as improvisation. It contains a variety of rich and colourful pieces with programmatic titles that Debussy would have been proud of (Accords Croisés AC116)
