    The third in the series of programmes by Marshall Walker in which he tells of his special relationship with the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius - the previous ones being A Letter to Sibelius and The Fog and the Island. In this one he relates stories of his maternal grandfather and his uncle, both of whose lives were touched by Sibelius's famous Valse Triste. This programme was a finalist in the 2007 New Zealand Radio Awards. A new, fourth programme in this series plays on Thursday 9th August at 7.00pm in Appointment (RNZ)

    In 1864 many homeless Gypsies settled in southern where they created communities on the outskirts of the towns and in the country. These communities were referred to as 'Mahalas' and it's here that the songs of the suburbs originated

    Sound from a Bygone Age is a selection of urban music from the Bucharest suburbs (Mahalas) which were recorded between 1964 and 1973. Romica Puceanu is a well known Romanian Gypsy singer who started singing in Lautari bands in Bucharest with her cousin's ensemble the Gore Brothers (CD-ART 1006)
