The ensemble takes its name from the mountain range separating Kyrgyzstan from China, better known by its Chinese name, Tien Shan. The music's played on traditional instruments, including the three-string komuz, the choor flute, wooden and metal jew's harps, and the kyl kayak, an upright box fiddle (Smithsonian Folkways Recordings SFW CD 40520)
