    (19) VERDI: La Traviata, an opera in three acts

    The two most common legends about La Traviata are that it was a failure at its première and that it was badly received because of the contemporary (1853) settings and costumes. The former idea dates back to the day after the première; the second took root in the 1870's. But it is possible to demolish both of them as errors, using Venetian and Milanese sources that have been available all along

    Set underneath the majestic Mount Taranaki on the site where Maori visionaries Te Whiti and Tohu staged revolutionary peaceful protests against confiscation of indigenous land, Parihaka International Peace Festival can't help but be a little bit magic. The line-up helps too, Fat Freddy's Drop, Tiki Taane and Ladi 6, plus the opportunity for the young to perform beside King Kapisi and Teremoana Rapley after a teenagers' performance workshop.
