Portuguese fado - Dona Rosa and Ana Moura

In Global Sounds today, two fadistas with very different backgrounds:

Dona Rosa was born into poverty in 1950s Lisbon. She contracted meningitis at the age of 4, resulting in complete blindness. As an adult, she supplemented her magazine-selling income by singing, and it was as a street musician that Dona Rosa was discovered by Austrian multimedia artist André Heller. He helped introduce her to an international audience, and in 1999 she made her first recording

It was around this time that young Lisbon singer Ana Moura was making the move from rock to fado, a genre that she'd loved growing up. This afternoon we'll hear songs from her 2009 release Leva-me aos fados (Jaro 4282; World Village 468072)
