The Goat Rodeo Sessions - Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, Edgar Meyer, Chris Thile

"A goat rodeo", quotes mandolinist extraordinaire Chris Thile, from the Urban Dictionary, "is about the most polite term used by aviation people to describe a scenario that requires about 100 things to go right at once if you intend to walk away from it"!

It's a fitting title for this album, given its somewhat complicated requirements: how to come up with original material for four string virtuosos from different disciplines (Thile, bassist Edgar Meyer, bluegrass musician Stuart Duncan and cellist Yo-Yo Ma)

But "the music kinda wrote itself," says Thile. "It was a matter of finding the centre of what all of us could do. Yo-Yo doesn't improvise, and Stuart doesn't really read music. So it was kind of easy given the boundaries we had - while also trying to make it sound like it didn't have any boundaries at all!" (Sony 789186)
