    (3) Anarchy & Order

The First World War, the Great War, changed a lot of people. Suddenly there were returned soldiers in the streets missing their limbs - or their minds. Composers changed too. Elgar and Sibelius gave it all way. And as for those pre-war revolutionaries: Stravinsky went back to the baroque, while Schoenberg wrote waltzes. But there were those who viewed war with contempt - and who viewed art with contempt, too. The Dadaists, in fact, laughed at everything. Still, if you wanted music that was bracingly new and full of optimism, there was always jazz.

Music by Igor Stravinsky, Arnold Schoenberg, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Kurt Schwitters, Erik Satie, George Antheil, Edgard Varèse, Ruth Crawford Seeger, George Gershwin, Cole Porter and Kurt Weill (ABC Classic FM)
