(5) Old Dreams and New Deals
The music of the Second World War and the immediate post-war years was characterised by a paradoxical degree of optimism. Shostakovich was temporarily off the political hook, thanks to a war-time symphony favourably misinterpreted by his government, Strauss composed his final glowingly romantic pieces and Benjamin Britten wrote the first great English opera in 300 years, Peter Grimes. The United States was unequivocally the centre of things: Bartók, Stravinsky, Schoenberg, Weill and Rachmaninov all lived there, and the American Way was celebrated from New York, New York to Oklahoma!
Music by Richard Strauss, Francis Poulenc, Olivier Messiaen, Dimitri Shostakovich, Béla Bartók, Arnold Schoenberg, Benjamin Britten, Pierre Boulez, Aaron Copland, John Antill, Leonard Bernstein, Rodgers & Hammerstein (ABC Classic FM)
