(7) Protest and Revival
Think of the 1960s and one thinks of pop music. Yet the music of the concert hall was at least as diverse and invigorating as the music of the jukebox. Some of it even owed its energy and its eclectic nature to the example of pop. The hard-line posturing of the 1950s avant-gardists quickly dissolved, and the plurality that had always been the century's musical hallmark now surged off in all directions, geographically as well as stylistically. Music by Luciano Berio, Karlheinz Stockhausen, György Ligeti, Iannis Xenakis, Krysztof Penderecki, Peter Sculthorpe, Toru Takemitsu, Peter Maxwell Davies, Bob Dylan, the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix (ABC Classic FM)
