The War that Changed the World
Five programmes
(2) Dresden, The Waging of War
How did technological and industrial development revolutionise World War One?
In the second debate of this series, historian and broadcaster Amanda Vickery heads to the German Military Museum in Dresden, with German historians, Sönke Neitzel and Annika Mombauer, to explore the waging of war, its methods and morality. The weapons of the First World War - tanks, gas, flame throwers, and Zeppelins - were like nothing that had been experienced before. We ask how these technological and industrial developments revolutionised war. German leaders accepted 'moral responsibility' for the war in the Treaty of Versailles. But did Germany really use methods that were so different from other countries? (recorded in German Military Museum, Dresden by BBC)
