Moondog: The Viking of 6th Avenue

Bohemian, beatnik, beggar - the blind street musician Louis Hardin, who dressed as a Viking, was called many things. The name he gave himself was Moondog. He spent most of his time on the streets of New York playing music, composing, and handing out pamphlets of his poetry and musical philosophy. But inside the horned helmet was the mind of a serious composer. One writer describes his music as 'a unique amalgam of Amerindian percussion, jazzy riffing, European counterpoint and troubadour balladeering'.

Ryan Smith explores the weird and sometimes wild world of Moondog who became an iconic figure in New York and attracted the attention of the leading artists and musicians of the day (RNZ)
