MENDELSSOHN: Symphony No 5 in D Op 107, Reformation (recorded in Auckland Town Hall by RNZ)

The Auckland Phiharmonia Orchestra’s Publicity Department assumed a satirical vein in the media release announcing its ‘Degenerate’ concert, which will be broadcast live on Thursday evening at 8pm. The concert is the first in the orchestra’s Degenerate, Denounced and Outraged series.

They write, “Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra is appealing to polite society with an advisement that Aucklanders should exercise caution in deciding to attend the controversial series. APO has today issued safety warnings for those wishing to attend the concert series, and has advised it will bear no responsibility for incidents of audible dissent, heckling and brawling.”

“The savagery and decadence of the works featured in the series is such that we can only hope Aucklanders will have the sense to stay away. While we don’t condone acts of violence, we are prepared for a furore.”

The satirical vein is used for effect of course, but it points to the fact that all the music in the series has, at one stage, been the subject of state or social criticism.

The title of this first concert, ‘Degenerate’, is taken from the term Entartete Musik, used in Nazi Germany for music that the regime banned.

All three works would have been illegal in the Third Reich: the Mendelssohn on account of the composer being racially Jewish, despite the fact that his family converted to Christianity and that this symphony was inspired by a Protestant theme; Stravinsky was considered “radical” and “decadent”; and Schoenberg was guilty on both counts – both Jewish and radical.
